The Diocese of Algoma is not raising enough funds through apportionment and is using its reserves to balance its budget. Once the reserves are exhausted, there are few options; the Diocese will have to cut expenses.
If the Diocese of Algoma cannot fund a bishop, a temporary solution may be that the Metropolitan becomes the Bishop of the Diocese as in the case of the Diocese of Moosonee. The Diocese of Moosonee has raised enough funds to support a Bishop, and in 2025 it elected its own bishop.
A more permanent solution would be to amalgamate all of Algoma or parts thereof with another diocese or dioceses. Thinking about the Diocese of Keewatin, which was joined to the Diocese of Rupert’s Land, is a way to consider what is involved with amalgamation.
If the Anne Germond Legacy Fund were to quickly reach its goal and generate sufficient interest income to support the Office of the Bishop, the Diocese’s financial position would be much more secure.
